The licence behind Betfair

ACMA says an online betting service must be on its register of licensed providers to operate in Australia. Here is the record we hold for the operator this site reviews, and the places you can check it without taking our word for it.

Each of these is a public page run by a government body or by the operator. The date is the date of the text we read, and where we had to read a saved copy, the copy is linked.

The regulator appears under two names

The Northern Territory's own site and Betfair's terms call the regulator the Northern Territory Wagering Commission. The national register kept by ACMA showed Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission on the date we read it, which is the name the Racing and Wagering Act 2024 (NT) gave the commission when it was passed. This site uses the name the Territory uses now.

The Territory's list does not say which kind of licence each company holds. The description “betting exchange licence” comes from Betfair's terms, and the Racing and Wagering Act 2024 (NT) provides for a licence of that name.

Why the register matters

Betfair's licence is a Territory one: the Northern Territory licenses sports bookmakers and betting exchange operators under the Racing and Wagering Act 2024 (NT).

The list to check is national. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) keeps a register of licensed interactive gambling providers and says a service must be on it to operate in Australia. If a site taking bets from Australians is not there, it is not licensed here, whatever badge it shows in its footer.

ACMA also takes complaints: about a provider that is missing from the register, and about a licensed one that offers credit or in-play betting online. The complaint route starts on the register page.
